This is a picture of my friend Lisa. Back in 2002, she traveled to Afghanistan, spending her time in Kabul doing humanitarian work and beginning her love for and training in midwifery. After Afghanistan she spent time training in the United States and Philippines before I met her, and she told me all about the experiences she had with these people and places. How much she really cared for what was going on with the war in Afghanistan, it’s people, and the importance of women’s rights. Lisa has always been a symbol of fierce independence and profound goodness to me. In 2014 she lost her battle with leukemia, and the news of her death traveled around the world. People from the hospital she worked with in Afghanistan, the midwives in the Philippines, and those of us visiting and caring for her in the states all remember her love and passion for those she worked with. I like to think we all care that much more about the people and places she visited because of what an advocate she was for the women and children she worked with. #thebreadwinner #thebreadwinnerstories #afghanistan #heros
