The Breadwinner Stories

A call for stories that aim to spark conversations about women’s and girls’ empowerment.

Inspired by The Breadwinner’s theme of storytelling, we’re launching a campaign to collect and share stories about gender equality with one goal in mind — harness the power of storytelling to amplify our message of education and empowerment. The more stories we share, the greater our collective ability to shape the conversation about the empowerment of women and girls around the world.

Be part of women’s and girl’s empowerment.

Add your voice and join the contest. A panel of guest judges, including Executive Producer Angelina Jolie, Director Nora Twomey, and Author Deborah Ellis will choose one winner per category listed below.

Each winner will receive a prize package including a limited edition framed print from The Breadwinner signed by Director Nora Twomey and a copy of the novel autographed by author Deborah Ellis.  One grand prize winner will also receive an invitation for two to attend a private screening of The Breadwinner in Los Angeles, California (travel and accommodation included per Official Contest Rules) where they will have a chance to meet some of the filmmakers.

Submit a story. Write a short story or a modern-day fable that highlights courage and girls.
